20 new air routes at Stockholm-Arlanda

[2008-04-02 13:25]

More and more people are choosing to fly. During the spring and summer, 20 new routes will go into service from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport − most of them with a low fare profile and targeted mainly to leisure travellers.

On Monday, March 31 the airport switched to its summer timetable, which includes an expanded number of non-stop flights to and from Stockholm-Arlanda. Most of these flights are to destinations in Europe, but some go to the United States, China and elsewhere.

“Stockholm-Arlanda is consolidating its position as the airport in Sweden with the biggest range of low fare tickets. The trend is clear − low fare travel and long-haul travel are in the greatest demand and are thus growing the fastest,” says Niclas Härenstam, Manager Press Relations, LFV Stockholm Division. LFV is the State enterprise that operates Sweden’s major airports.

The following airlines are starting new services to Europe and vicinity:

  • Adria Airways, Ljubljana (Slovenia), 4 times/week, starting 30 mars
  • Atlantic Airways, Faroe Islands, 2 times/week, starting June 19
  • Niki, Vienna (Austria), 6 times/week, starting April 30
  • Norwegian/FlyNordic, Sarajevo (Bosnia), once a week, starting June 7
  • Norwegian/FlyNordic, Istanbul (Turkey), 2 times/week, starting June 14
  • Norwegian/FlyNordic, Málaga (Spain), 3 times/week, starting April 5
  • Norwegian/FlyNordic, Düsseldorf (Germany), 6 times/week, starting June 12
  • Norwegian/FlyNordic, Nice (France), 4 times/week, starting June 4
  • Mapjet, Vienna (Austria), once a week, starting March 5
  • Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Tromsø (Norway), 2 times/week, starting June 23
  • SAS, Zagreb (Croatia), 3 times/week, starting March 30
  • SAS, Stavanger (Norway), 3 times/week, starting March 30
  • Skyways, Pärnu (Estonia), once a week, starting May 31
  • Sterling, Murcia (Spain), once a week, starting April 4
  • Sterling, Naples (Italy), once a week, starting April 5
  • Sterling, Florence (Italy), 4 times/week, starting March 30
  • Sterling, Burgas (Bulgaria), 2 times/week, starting April 5
  • Sun Express, Izmir (Turkey), once a week, starting May 4
  • Viking Airlines, Damascus (Syria), once a week, starting June 3

The big news this summer is that Delta Air Lines is starting a route between Stockholm and Atlanta, Georgia on June 4, with six departures a week. Atlanta is the world’s largest airport, both in terms of passenger and flight numbers.

“This new air route will give Swedish passengers additional and often fastest, more efficient connections to the southern and western United States. Meanwhile, of course, Sweden will also become more accessible to the American market,” Mr Härenstam says.

Together with other airlines − SAS, Continental Airlines, US Airways and Malaysia Airlines − this summer Stockholm-Arlanda Airport can offer 36 non-stop flights per week to and from the United States. The destinations are Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.

Starting March 31, SAS has expanded its service to Beijing (China) from three to six departures a week. Together with Air China, Stockholm-Arlanda offers ten non-stop flights a week to Beijing.

It has also been announced that this autumn, Norwegian will start a route to Dubai (United Arab Emirates), with three departures per week.

“LFV’s ambition is to be able to present one new intercontinental route each year to and from Stockholm-Arlanda. This year our efforts − in partnership with other organisations in the region − to market Stockholm and Sweden have been successful, and we are very pleased to present two new destinations: Atlanta and Dubai,” Mr Härenstam says.
