This is a press release from Flygbussarna Airport Coaches
Flygbussarna Airport Coaches is making major environmental investments. In partnership with Volvo Buses, the company is now beginning a project to adapt all its buses to run on pure biofuel. “We don’t want to talk about the environment; we want to do something concrete to reduce the fossil emissions of ground transport to and from airports,” says Mikael Bergkvist, CEO of Flygbussarna Airport Coaches.
The first step is that five buses in Stockholm will begin operating on Swedish-grown organic rapeseed (canola). The trial is a joint effort with Volvo, and if the first buses work out well, the trial will expand later this year. Not so much work is required to adapt the buses to the new fuel. Volvo adjusts the engines and adapts the servicing to biofuels. Fuel requirements are secured by contracts with local suppliers.
Environmental issues increasingly important
Flygbussarna Airport Coaches provides bus services to seven airports in the Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö regions. The company’s message to its customers previously focused on value for money, frequency of departures and proximity to coach stops. But given this project, the environmental benefits of taking the airport coach will be highlighted as an obvious factor.
“It is always more environmentally friendly to take public transport. In spite of everything, buses have very low emission figures per person-kilometre compared with driving your car or taking a taxi. Now that we are switching to biofuel, we are going from a good environmental conscience to a clean environmental conscience, and that is really something to tell our customers,” Mr Bergkvist says.
Rapeseed among best alternatives
Volvo has “environmental care” as one of its three core values. “We are pleased that Flygbussarna Airport Coaches has chosen Volvo Buses as its collaboration partner in this environmental project,” says Edward Jobson, Environmental Director at Volvo Buses. “The Volvo Group works with numerous alternative fuels. Biofuel from locally cultivated rapeseed is one of the best alternatives available today.”
