Air cargo via Stockholm-Arlanda increased by 26 per cent during the first half of 2007 compared to the year-earlier period. A total of 86,000 tonnes of cargo were handled at the airport during the first six months of this year.
“Swedish industry is performing very well right now, but aside from good domestic volume a large proportion of this growth comes from cargo volume originating in Norway and Finland,” says Björn Ragnebrink, Director Business Development Air Cargo, LFV.
This means that Stockholm not only acts as a local centre for shipments to and from Sweden, but is also serving as a platform for shipments to and from Scandinavia including Finland.
“One could say that the market has confirmed what we knew all along – that Stockholm works very well as a gateway to Scandinavia. When air cargo carriers choose to fly to Stockholm, they not only reach the Swedish market, but also the entire Scandinavian/Nordic region,” Mr Ragnebrink says.
More and more cargo is now being flown non-stop from Stockholm to its final destination. As a consequence, the proportion of cargo first being hauled to some other hub in Europe before being loaded on an aircraft is decreasing. This also reduces its environmental impact.
The growth forecast remains good, pointing towards an annual growth in air cargo volume of around five per cent.
The air cargo carriers serving Arlanda are Korean Airlines Cargo, Cathay Pacific Cargo, China Airlines Cargo, Jade Cargo, British Airways Cargo, DHL, UPS, FedEx and TNT.
