Increased number of foreign tourists in August as well

The “Arlanda Index” shows that the number of foreign tourists in Sweden remains at a steady high level. The increase in August was 2.7 per cent compared to the same month of 2006.
In absolute terms, the August figures signify an estimated export value of 12.2 billion. The accumulated export value for the first eight months of 2007 is SEK 56.7 billion, and the full-year forecast is SEK 78.1 billion.
“We know that for every SEK 100 a foreign tourist spends in Sweden, around SEK 45 goes back to the central and local governments in the form of taxes. The more attractive Sweden becomes for foreign visits, the more tax revenue,” says Eva Hedenström, CEO of Föreningen Turism i Sverige (FörTur), an organisation representing several hundred companies in the tourist trade.
Tourism is of major importance to employment in Sweden. Projections to date indicate more than 150,000 full-time employees on an annual basis during 2007. In that case it would represent an increase of nearly 2,000 full-time jobs compared to last year.
The Arlanda Visitors Index, which was unveiled for the first time in July, is an index for estimating the pressure on the hospitality trade on a monthly basis, calculated with the help of the volume of international traffic at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. The purpose of the index is to give all those with a stake in the hospitality and meetings industry a quick tool for planning their operations.
