The information technology company CSC has developed various services to reduce the aviation industry’s passenger and baggage management costs. These services are being displayed in the LFV stand at Routes 2007, a global aviation industry trade fair taking place at Stockholm International Fairs (Älvsjömässan) during September 24-27. Participating in Routes 2007 are representatives from 600 airports and 350 airlines.

The IT company Computer Science Corporation (CSC) is now presenting a number of innovative solutions in the IT and telecom field that will help the aviation industry achieve better profitability.
The guiding principle of this work is innovation, which is pursued via CSC’s Airline Innovation Programme. The purpose of this programme is to help customers in the aviation industry to transform ideas into practically implemented improvements related to new services, products and processes. At present, the programme is focusing on two main areas: “Mobile Services and Technologies” and “Track and Trace”.
“Passengers are in constant motion, and so are many aviation industry employees. Yet queues are common at airports. The aim of the services we are presenting at Routes 2007 is to make travel management easier, for example by enabling check-in to occur with the help of a mobile phone even before the passenger is at the airport,” says Jan Aldergren, business development manager at CSC Airline Solutions.
Routes 2007 takes places yearly, and its purpose is to enable airports to attract airlines to establish routes serving their particular airport. In this context, services that can generate shorter turnaround times are crucial. CSC’s strategy is based on analysing the needs that exist and then developing services that meet these needs.
At Routes 2007, CSC is showing its solutions at a stand shared with LFV, the State enterprise that operates Sweden’s major airports. One important service on display is CSC’s “Mobile Passenger Services”. This is based on offering completely digitised check-in and boarding processes that can be implemented outside the airport, instead of today’s paper-based travel management system.
“I anticipate that Mobile Passenger Services can enjoy a major breakthrough as soon as terminals are equipped with reading devices that can handle mobile bar codes. This would give customers a genuine opportunity for self-service,” says Håkan Ozan, a mobile solutions specialist at CSC.
CSC is also displaying a tracking service known as “Track & Trace” for cargo containers, baggage carts and the tow-bars that are hooked to aircraft when these are to be moved.
“This equipment is valuable and has a tendency to become scattered around an airport. By attaching an RFID chip, LFV can use a monitor to read where the equipment is located and to collect it,” Mr Aldergren says.
LFV foresees major opportunities to use new technology to streamline the processes that govern actual travel management.
“We believe that investing in new technology may be one way for the aviation industry to improve its operations and profitability,” says Maria Wall Petrini, head of strategic business development at LFV Arlanda.
CSC has many years of experience in developing IT and telecom solutions for the aviation industry. In 2003, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) chose to outsource all its IT operations to CSC. This assignment not only included managing actual operation and administration of all IT systems at the airline, but also developing new applications.
