Long-haul flights increase at Stockholm-Arlanda
The number of international passengers continued to increase at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in October, compared to the same month last year. Travel to long-haul destinations showed especially large growth.
October 2007 was another strong month for international travel to and from Stockholm-Arlanda. The airport noted 1,146,523 passengers on international flights, up more than seven per cent on October 2006.
Several long-haul destinations stood out in the statistics by reporting even larger increases. The number of passengers to Beijing (China) rose by 43 per cent, to Bangkok (Thailand) by 33 per cent and to New York (US) by 17 per cent. The increase was partly due to an expansion in the available seats, but also to a higher number of passengers per departure.
Destinations that gained new air services in the low fare segment also showed larger increases than average, for example Berlin (Germany), up 56 per cent.
“Stockholm-Arlanda is not only Sweden’s largest international airport, but also the airport with the largest selection of low fare flights. This makes it easier and cheaper for us Stockholmers and Swedes to travel to other destinations, but equally easy and cheap for others to visit us. There is a very strong connection between a good selection of aviation links and the revenue of the hospitality industry,” says Niclas Härenstam, Manager Press Relations, LFV Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
The number of domestic passengers at Stockholm-Arlanda decreased by six per cent compared to October last year, partly because more people instead chose to fly to and from Stockholm-Bromma Airport, which reported an eight per cent increase.
The total number of aircraft movements − take-offs and landings − decreased by three per cent, which means that on average, aircraft today depart carrying more passengers than a year ago and that the environmental impact of aviation at Stockholm-Arlanda has thus diminished.
