More green approaches now possible

[2008-05-09 15:55]

Stockholm-Arlanda Airport’s green approaches are now going into more regular service. What was previously a trial project has now been approved, opening the way for all airlines to use green approaches when landing at Stockholm-Arlanda. The number of green approaches is thus expected to increase from 10 to 30 per day. For the time being, such approaches may only be used during off-peak traffic.

“LFV and our partners are continuing our work, which will lead to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport having the largest number of green approaches in Europe by 2012 at the latest,” says Anders Stålhammar, Head of Communications at the Air Navigation Services (ANS) Division of LFV, the state enterprise that operates Sweden’s major airports.

During a development period that began in March 2006, Scandinavian Airlines, Falcon Air and Blue 1 have participated in testing green approaches to Stockholm-Arlanda during off-peak traffic. The project period has shown good results, such as reductions in noise over Stockholm-Arlanda’s neighbouring municipalities, fuel consumption and quantities of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions.

“These measures are part of LFV’s long-term efforts to reduce the environmental impact of aviation. We will be continuously introducing large and small measures that together will reduce emissions and noise. Our target is that by 2012, eight out of ten aircraft approaches to Stockholm-Arlanda can be classified as green,” Mr Stålhammar says.

The green approaches now going into more regular service have been designed to avoid population centres to the greatest possible extent. An aircraft flying toward Stockholm-Arlanda is also kept at an altitude of at least 3,000 metres, enabling it to carry out a “continuous descent approach”. This approach takes place automatically, with the help of the aircraft’s on-board computer system.

The Green Flights project is a collaborative effort involving airlines, airports, the ANS Division and industrial companies. During a three-year period, green approaches will also be introduced at Göteborg Landvetter Airport near Gothenburg and at Umeå and Malmö Airports.
