More passengers and higher tourism revenue

[2007-10-08 12:00]

The number of international passengers to and from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport increased by eight per cent in September compared to September 2006. According to the Arlanda Index, Sweden’s tourism sector income rose by six per cent during the month.

A total of 1,673,721 passengers travelled to and from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in September. International traffic is growing sharply, and three out of four passengers at Arlanda were travelling on international flights. Long-haul destinations are growing the most in relative terms: Beijing (China), +74 per cent; Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), +50 per cent; Philadelphia (US), +35 per cent; Bangkok (Thailand), +30 per cent; and New York (US), +21 per cent.

More international passengers mean more tourism income for Sweden. According to the Arlanda Visitor Index, tourism revenue during September amounted to SEK 7.3 billion, which represents a six per cent increase compared to September last year. Accumulated tourism income during the period January-September is SEK 64.4 billion.

The Arlanda Index is based on the number of international passengers arriving at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. Studies have shown that there is a very high correlation between the number of passengers at Arlanda and tourism industry figures in terms of revenue and overnight stays.

“We are continuing to work systematically to gain more non-stop routes to and from Stockholm, an effort that is now bearing fruit. The number of such air routes has increased both within Europe and to other continents, which in turn increases tourism income − both in the form of business trips and private trips − to Stockholm and Sweden,” says Jan Lindqvist, Head of Corporate Communication, LFV Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

“Civil aviation has a unique role when it comes to generating opportunities for international trade, as well as social and cultural exchange. It is gratifying to note that this view is shared by the government-appointed study on the future of Swedish airports, which presented its report last week. In the report, investigator Christina Rogestam writes that “aviation is the only mode of transport that can create satisfactory international accessibility,” Mr Lindqvist says.
