New cargo terminal to be built at Stockholm-Arlanda
Air cargo is continuing to grow at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. An additional terminal will now be built as Netherlands-based AST holding expands its operations in Sweden. The terminal will be 5,700 square metres in size. Another 30 jobs will be created and transport services will become more environmentally friendly.
The terminal is being built by Nordic Airport Properties (NAP) and will be leased by A.S.P. Logistic AB. Construction starts on September 1 and the terminal will be ready for occupancy on October 1, 2009.
Today ASP is located in Rotebro north of Stockholm. From there, cargo goes by lorries to one of the major European airports before being flown to the customer. In many cases the aircraft flies right over Sweden en route to Asia.
“The new terminal will boost our capacity and lower our costs. It is also good for the environment when we can fly directly from Stockholm,” says Michaël HA Brinkman, CEO and principal shareholder of AST holding.
Flying cargo directly from Stockholm-Arlanda eliminates thousands of lorries from the roads. So even though emissions will increase at the airport, overall the move will benefit the environment in a global climate change perspective.
A.S.P. handles 36,000 tonnes of merchandise exports yearly but expects to increase its volume to 60,000 tonnes in the new terminal.
Stockholm-Arlanda Airport already has five cargo terminals, which handled 170,000 tonnes of goods last year.
