Stockholm-Arlanda air cargo praised

Air cargo at Stockholm-Arlanda is performing well. The magazine Air Cargo World ranks the airport as one of Europe’s best in this field. Last year air cargo volume rose by 19 per cent. The cargo flight schedule at Stockholm-Arlanda is expanding and airlines are opening their own cargo offices at the airport.

Stockholm-Arlanda is one of Europe’s best air cargo airports, according to freight forwarders and airlines that have ranked airports around the world. The Air Cargo Excellence survey was initiated by Air Cargo World magazine, which ranks Stockholm-Arlanda sixth in Europe in the category “Airports Europe, 499,999 or fewer tonnes” of cargo. The airports are rated for performance, value, facilities and operations − for example how smoothly such authorities as Customs work.

“We now belong to the top tier in Europe. This ranking is confirmation that Stockholm-Arlanda is good at air cargo,” says Björn Ragnebrink, Director of Business Development, Intercontinental Routes & Air Cargo for LFV, the state enterprise that operates the major Swedish airports.

During 2006 and 2007, four new airlines started cargo routes from Stockholm-Arlanda: Korean, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines and Jade, which all fly a cargo version of the Boeing 747 jumbo jet.

“Previously we had no traditional air cargo operators at Stockholm-Arlanda. But in recent years LFV has made an international effort to attract new airlines that fly cargo, and we have been successful. Stockholm and Sweden are gaining an international reputation as a strong market,” Mr Ragnebrink says.

Last year cargo volume at Stockholm-Arlanda rose by 19 per cent compared to 2006. The airport handled 168,500 tonnes of cargo in 2007. Cargo airlines are putting down roots at Stockholm-Arlanda and expanding their schedules, adding new departures.

“Cathay Pacific is choosing to open its own office at the airport and has further improved its product in terms of departure times and days. Korean is also opening its own office and has also communicated that Stockholm is its Nordic hub. Jade is increasing its departures from one to three each week,” Mr Ragnebrink says.
