Art and design are providing unconventional experiences at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. During the spring, the video installation Parachute by Emma Kihl is being shown in Terminal 5.
At Gate 1 in the airport’s Terminal 5, passengers can relax in one of Danish designer Arne Jacobsen’s classic Egg armchairs while experiencing Emma Kihl’s video installation Parachute.
“We have become better at using design as a tool, and sometimes we devise both amusing and unconventional solutions. Emma’s installation is one such fun solution. Samsung’s TV monitors were already in place, and there was no problem in getting them to show Parachute. For the first time, we are testing a sound dome, which means that the sound from the TV is only audible in a limited area – in the Egg chairs,” says Karin Elfver Renström, Design Manager, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
Parachute is a film that shows the packing of a parachute. In a close-up scene, the viewer can follow a sequence where a man opens a backpack, takes out a light-weight piece of fabric and goes to the other side of the room to carefully fold and press together the piece of fabric and its connected lines into a smaller backpack.
“What interested me was how individuals prepare to transport themselves through the air in relation to the airport’s large informative safety and security systems,” says Emma Kihl.
The video installation Parachute by Emma Kihl will be shown at various locations in Terminal 5 during May and June.
Design projects at Stockholm-Arlanda that have received extensive publicity in recent years have included lavatories decorated with photo art in Terminal 5, sun shades featuring nature photos and the sound and light-filled passageway between Terminal 4 and Terminal 2.
