Stockholm-Arlanda urges passengers to use public transport

On Monday, November 17, Stockholm-Arlanda is starting a major advertising campaign to persuade passengers to choose more environmentally friendly modes of transport when travelling to and from the airport. In this way, Stockholm-Arlanda wishes to tie together the regional public transport system with the global one − aviation.

Choose a train, coach or ecotaxi for trips to and from the airport. According to one of the conditions in its environmental permit, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport must reduce its emissions. Road traffic accounts for the largest share.

“To enable Stockholm-Arlanda to continue contributing to the accessibility and competitiveness of our region and country, we must persuade more people to travel to and from the airport in a more environmentally friendly way. Road traffic accounts for the largest increase in carbon dioxide emissions at Stockholm-Arlanda, but emissions from aviation have decreased,” says Jan Lindqvist, Head of Corporate Communication, LFV, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

For those passengers who are unable to take public transport, better parking options have been created for environmentally “clean cars” – spaces closest to the terminal at every parking facility, which are reserved for clean cars.

“Clean cars are a good choice for those who cannot utilise public transport, but we are concerned that petrol is cheaper than ethanol right now. This is something that affects both environmental clean cars and ecotaxis,” says Mr Lindqvist.

Earlier this autumn, eleven regional transport market players joined forces to improve accessibility to and from the airport while satisfying environmental requirements. The Letter of Intent they signed signifies that these organisations are prepared to move from words to actions in order to safeguard Stockholm-Arlanda’s position as a national and regional transport hub.

The advertising campaign will run from November 17 to December 7, 2008.
