Towards greener aviation

[2008-03-06 10:13]

Aviation is becoming more and more environmentally sound. Today the LFV Group, its Air Navigation Services (ANS) Division and Stockholm-Arlanda Airport − together with Scandinavian Airlines Sweden − are presenting new environmental targets.

Aviation accounts for 2 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. In Sweden the figure is nearly 5 per cent, since Sweden has cleaner energy production than many other countries.

Over the past 40 years, fuel consumption and thus emissions have decreased by 70 per cent. A modern aircraft consumes 0.03 litres of fuel per passenger/kilometre, about the same as a moped.

Now LFV and SAS are taking joint initiatives to continue reducing emissions.

• On April 10 they are introducing ECO descents, which are aimed at adapting the speed of aircraft in order to reduce environmental impact.
• On May 8 they are introducing STAR-CDA continuous descent approaches at Stockholm-Arlanda. This means that more “green approaches” can take place during off-peak traffic. This saves about 160 kilos of fuel and 400 kilos of carbon dioxide emissions per landing.
• A system called Free Route Airspace Sweden is being introduced during the coming year. It enables aircraft flying over northern Sweden to freely choose their flight path.

Some concrete targets are to ensure that:

• 8 out of 10 aircraft approaches will be green by 2012.
• 8 out of 10 overflights will use Free Route Airspace Sweden by 2012.
• Queue time at Stockholm-Arlanda will decrease 50 per cent by 2010.
• SAS will cut its carbon dioxide emissions 20 per cent by 2020.

“The journey towards this set of goals has already begun, among things with our globally unique ‘green approaches’ at Stockholm-Arlanda. Our goals demonstrate how important we believe it is to reduce our total carbon dioxide emissions in a growing global market,” says Anders Ehrling, Managing Director of Scandinavian Airlines Sweden.

“Aviation safety is always our top priority. But in the future, environmental standards will be the strongest driving force for introducing new solutions. This is a far-reaching change compared to the past,” says Thomas Allard, Head of the Air Navigation Services Division, LFV Group.

“LFV Stockholm-Arlanda Airport has cut its own carbon dioxide emissions in half since 2002. Today we are offsetting the remaining emissions, and we have adopted a zero emissions vision for the future,” says Kerstin Lindberg Göransson, Managing Director of LFV Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
