Stockholm-Arlanda Airport continuously works to introduce improvements, especially for you as a passenger. Construction of the new portion of Terminal 5 is currently under way at full speed and is expected to be largely completed in time for Christmas. Benefits to passengers will include better information, a larger security checkpoint and new shops.

Peter Bohman, Terminal Manager at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, has a clear vision that is as much about atmosphere as about boosting the airport’s terminal capacity.
“The focus of our work is on what passengers think is important and how they perceive the terminal environment. We will be working hard to create a welcoming atmosphere in the hall. Passengers want clarity, simplicity and efficiency. Among the ways we will achieve this will be to expand the terminal area and to more clearly separate the check-in and security screening areas.”
Larger security checkpoint
A large security checkpoint is being built in the new portion of the terminal. Due to new rules in recent years concerning hand baggage − for example requiring removal of computers from their cases and showing plastic bags containing liquids at the checkpoint − the design of security screening areas has changed to accommodate the shift from broad, relatively quick screenings to substantially more detailed screenings. The new checkpoint is about ten times larger than the existing one; it is located on two levels and it will provide at least eleven security screening lanes.
New entrance and larger departure hall
Terminal 5 will also gain a new entrance at the angle between the old and new portions of the terminal. The opening between the two portions will also be broadened by re-locating the X-change currency exchange office. This will enable you as a passenger to gain a clearer overview of the two portions of the departure hall. A new air traffic information area will also be created directly across from the entrance.
The new portion of the departure hall will also become larger because the façade towards the street is being moved outward, utilising the area comprising today’s entrance. Check-in machines will be placed in a new location along the façade.
Large new duty- and tax-free shop and centralised information
Inside the security checkpoint, you will enter an “orientation zone” − an area where you can find all the information you could conceivably need before your departure and before spending time in the transit hall. After that, you will walk straight into the new duty- and tax-free shop − your path will go straight through the shop, instead of alongside it. With its eight metre high ceilings and 1,700 square metres of space, it will be an impressive addition to the airport’s selection of shops and will be twice the size of today’s biggest tax-free shop.
New café and new shops
At the glass façade towards the apron, there will be a new café surrounded by small shop units, where you will have the opportunity to watch at close hand how the aircraft are being prepared for departure.
The renovations and extensions in Terminal 5 are expected to be fully completed by April 2009, but major new portions of the terminal will go into service late this year, in time for Christmas traffic.
