Pack properly and start your winter holiday trip early

[2008-02-22 09:54]

This weekend the annual winter sport holiday week begins in Stockholm, which means heavy traffic on winter sport flights from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. We urge you to get to the airport early and think carefully about how to pack properly while you are still at home.

On Friday evening several “ski charter” flights depart for the Alps, but such traffic will be heaviest on Saturday, February 23 − with some 20 departures. The difference compared to “sun charters” is that a ski charter involves so much more baggage, in the form of winter clothing and skiing equipment.

“We simply urge you to get to the airport early. It is better to have a little extra time at the airport, and have a calm cup of coffee before your flight, than to begin your sport holiday all stressed out,” says Niclas Härenstam, Manager Press Relations, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

Some sound advice for faster check-in and security screening:

All sharp objects must be packed in your check-in baggage, along with items containing liquids, for example perfumes, lotions and sprays. Liquids that you will be carrying in your hand baggage must be packed in containers each not exceeding 100 millilitres (about 3.5 ounces) − as many containers as will fit easily inside a re-sealable one litre (1.1 quart) plastic bag. This plastic bag must be shown at the security screening checkpoint.

Prepare for the security checkpoint by placing all coins and other small loose items in your outer garments, which will be X-rayed. Take off your jacket or coat while still in the queue. If you have a computer with you, this must be opened and placed separately on the conveyor belt.
“All this will save several seconds per passenger, which adds up to several minutes for the person standing at the end of the queue,” Mr Härenstam says.

Skis and other bulky baggage must be left at a special check-in counter where you will need to show your boarding card. Please note that your special baggage will arrive for pick-up on a separate conveyor when you fly back to Stockholm-Arlanda.
