Premiere for rapeseed coach service

[2008-04-22 14:43]

Flygbussarna

Today, Tuesday, April 22, Flygbussarna Airport Coaches began service with its first bus powered by a locally produced rapeseed (canola) based fuel.

Within the next few weeks, a total of four airport coaches with rapeseed in their tanks will ply the routes between Stockholm-Arlanda Airport and central Stockholm as well as between Stockholm-Arlanda and Stockholm-Bromma Airports. They are powered by rapeseed methyl ester (RME), a renewable biofuel that emits less carbon dioxide than ethanol.

“This is the first step towards achieving our goal of having all our airport coaches operating on non-fossil fuels within three years,” says Mikael Bergkvist, CEO of Flygbussarna Airport Coaches.

It is true that more rapeseed fuel than diesel oil is required to drive the same distance, but with RME consumption of about 0.35 litres per kilometre, carbon dioxide emission is about 5 grams per km. This should be compared to a passenger car, which emits around 200 g/km.

“The big challenge in our zero vision for carbon dioxide is to reduce the emissions from ground transport. This is why we are very encouraged by the trend towards an ever-diminishing environmental impact from airport coaches,” says Jan Lindqvist, Head of Corporate Communication, Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
